Brighton v Chelsea Match Preview

Chelsea 202324

Mauricio Pochettino’s Blues are on track to secure European Football via the Premier League this season, and a win at the Amex Stadium against Roberto De Zerbi’s Seagulls would certainly boost their chances.

Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea are enjoying a rich vein of form in the 2023/24 Premier League in recent times, and they now look to emerge victorious against Brighton on Wednesday evening, as they look to earn three points and take a step closer to securing European Football for next season.

The most recent Premier League game played by the Blues saw them emerge as 3 – 2 winners against Nuno Espirito Santo’s Nottingham Forest at the City Ground. Chelsea’s goal scorers that day were Mykhailo Mudryk (8’), Raheem Sterling (80’) and Nicolas Jackson (82’). Hosts Forest did get two goals, which came through Willy Boly (16’) and Callum Hudson-Odoi (74’), who is formerly of Chelsea.

This result, combined with the action elsewhere has meant that Pochettino’s side now find themselves sat in 7th place with 57 points having been accumulated from their 36 matches in the Premier League to date. They are only behind Newcastle United in 6th place on goal difference. The Blues are also 6 points adrift of Spurs in 5th with two matches remaining for the West London Club.

The three points earned in Nottingham was their third top flight win in a row – this result had followed a 2 – 0 win against Spurs and an emphatic 5 – 0 victory against West Ham United. Both of these games were played at Stamford Bridge.

If Chelsea do indeed collect all three points on Wednesday night, they could climb to 6th place above Newcastle United, should the Magpies lose their match against Erik Ten Hag’s Manchester United at Old Trafford on the same day.

Moving on to Brighton, their most recent game in the Premier League saw them play out a 1 – 1 stalemate at St. James’s Park against Newcastle United. Roberto De Zerbi’s side took the lead through Dutch defender Joel Veltman in the opening twenty minutes of the contest (18’), before Magpies midfielder Sean Longstaff restored parity in first half stoppage time (45+5’), which turned out to be the final goal in this draw.

This result leaves the Seagulls in 10th place as things stand, with a total of 48 points to their name from their 36 Premier League matches to date. The South Coast outfit are 4 points behind West Ham United in 9th place with 2 matches remaining, and they will be looking to finish above Bournemouth who are level in points, as well as Crystal Palace and Wolves, who are both just two points behind them.

If Brighton do collect all three points, they will remain in 10th place, but they will come to within just a point of David Moyes and West Ham in 9th place with victory.

The most recent match in all competitions to be played between the Blues and the Seagulls took place in the Premier League on Sunday 3rdDecember 2023 at Stamford Bridge. It was a game which Mauricio Pochettino’s team won 3 – 2 thanks to goals from Enzo Fernandez (17’, 65’ – Penalty) and Levi Colwill (21’). Facundo Buonanotte (43’) and Joao Pedro (90+2’) were both on target on the day for the Seagulls.

Overall, Chelsea and Brighton have come face to face on a total of just 22 times in all competitions. It is the Blues with a superior record of 14 wins compared to 3 for their South Coast counterparts. The West London outfit have only drawn 3 times against the Seagulls so far.

After this game against Brighton, Mauricio Pochettino’s Blues will go toe to toe with Andoni Iraola and his AFC Bournemouth side at Stamford Bridge on what is the final day of the 2023/24 Premier League season on Sunday 19th May 2024 – it will be a 16:00 kick off that afternoon.
